Hazardous Building Materials
Asbestos has been historically used in the manufacturing of more than 2000 products. This includes many products used in the residential and commercial construction industry such as drywall joint compound, texture coats, floor tiles, sheet flooring, mastics and tars to name a few. Asbestos products when not disturbed is of minimal concern, however once that renovation or demolition commences, if present, asbestos fibres can become airborne and inhaled by unsuspecting contractors and occupants. Asbestos is listed as a carcinogen on the federal designated substances list.
Before you start that renovation or demolition, contact Sifton Range to determine if any of the regulated products as identified on the federal designated substance list is present and requires safe work procedures for the safe removal.
Section 10.56 of the Yukon Occupational Health and Safety Regulations states:
"prior to demolition or renovation, the structure must be reviewed by a person competent in the identification of hazardous building materials to determine their presence or absence."
Sifton Range's staff, are certified hazardous building materials inspectors under the US EPA Toxic Substance Control Act and are certified for the collection of asbestos-containing materials under the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) as well as WorkSafeBC Level S assessor designation. Certification in assessing of hazardous materials is a must as a non-trained person may cause unnecessary release of asbestos fibres into your living area or workspace.
